Cape Town – There is something about the sight of a luxury sports car that has crashed after traveling at excessive speed that is mocked by onlookers.
With a starting price for a sports car like a McLaren 720S ranging from over R5 million, for example, the driver (hopefully unscathed) is understandably touchy, as it has also dented his ego. It also adds insult to injury when your driving skills are questioned, much less your sense of responsibility.
On Sunday morning, when a driver of a McLaren 720S seriously damaged his car after crashing into a tree on Helen Suzman Boulevard near the Cape Town Stadium in Green Point, he did not take the comments directed at him kindly.
The McLaren had reportedly been “dicing” a Lamborghini Huracan Performante, which emerged unscathed.
Several videos of the incident reached WhatsApp. In one video, a man tells the driver, who is standing next to the car: “You can’t drive it, bro.”
Another man can be heard yelling, “It’s a rich man’s toy.”
A joke ensues and the driver walks up to the man who videotapes it, saying, “You’re never going to have one.”
“You just wrapped one around a tree. Good ”, the man replies.
In another video made of the incident, a man can be heard saying: “These two were playing. This guy has lost control, he hit a tree.”
Another guy said in a video while passing the crash scene: “This guy just flew by. Look at this now. It’s fucking lovely. I can’t believe it. These okes can’t drive these things.
Cape Town City Traffic Spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout said the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed it shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday. She said no injuries were reported.
In June of this year, a police chief in the UK got into trouble for appearing to taunt a McLaren 650S driver who was speeding on social media for crashing his vehicle into a wall on a 25 mile street. h.
