WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
Set in the year 2092 and follows the crew of a space junk collecting ship called The Victory. When they discover a humanoid robot named Dorothy who is known to be a weapon of mass destruction, they engage in a risky business.
WHAT WE THINK:
Put on the magnetic boots and hold on for an amazing ride with Space sweepers – one of the funniest space epics I have ever had the privilege of watching. If you are an old man Firefly fan or obsessed with K-dramas, this Korean space opera is everything you could have wished for.
I’m just upset that there’s no more.
Space sweepers is set in 2092, where Earth has become an uninhabitable habitat, with only the elite living in luxury in space while the rest of humanity struggles to survive. This has created a market for space sweepers – the landowners who make their money cleaning up hazardous space debris for peanuts. A crew comes across a dangerous cargo on an abandoned ship and, while trying to make money from it, stumbles upon a nefarious plot orchestrated by a dangerous megacorporation.
It’s an absolute joy of a movie, mixing the space cowboy style of Firefly and old Star Wars with the famous Korean soap operas to create a great epic. I wish it was a series rather than a movie, although with a two-hour runtime, thankfully you can see a lot of this dystopian future.
The main team is your traditional gang of misfits with an evil captain who I want to be in real life (Kim Tae-ri), a mission-jaded ex-military (Song Joong-ki), a former gangster. with a heart of gold (Jin Seon-kyu) and the most daring robot ever to be robotized (Yoo Hae-jin).
They’re not exactly unique characters, and I wish they spent a bit more time in the backstory for most of them, but they’re still very endearing and you can’t help but fall in love with them. The crew’s stamina is melted by the sweetest and loveliest actress, Park Ye-rin as Dorothy, whose cuteness you wish you could put in a bottle to get out when you’re feeling down.
As for space battles and fighting, it is very reminiscent of anime action style with amazing CGI effects. The best scene is quite early when the space sweepers fight over some junk; It’s not that important to the story, but it’s clear that CGI artists put a lot of love into that battle, which makes it a great show to watch. It’s a shame to waste that on a small screen TV or laptop and it would have been epic to have seen it in IMAX. If you can, try to arrange for someone to watch it on your big TV if you don’t have one.
While the main cast speaks Korean, it is one of the most diverse multilingual films I have ever seen and far more representative of a globalized future than you would see in Hollywood movies. Screenwriter and director Jo Sung-hee weaves an incredible world in a short space of time, quickly explaining how everyone gets on with universal translators. It’s mostly interwoven with Korean and English, but many other characters speak their own languages to each other, although it takes some getting used to switching between subtitles and hearing the English villain. For an international platform like Netflix, it could provide a blueprint for future collaborative multinational content.
The story may not be perfect and is full of cliches and predictable plot points, but I’ve long been excited about a movie as well as Space sweepers. Show what failures are like Elysium Y Valerian and the city of a thousand planets It should have been, and I just hope we get to see more of this kind of sci-fi content from Korea in the future. This movie has established itself in my favorite sci-fi movies and I will see it again several times.
