Eskom has acknowledged that its decision to restrict electricity supply to densely populated communities where illegal connections abound will also have an impact on citizens who pay their bills.
The utility announced Tuesday that it would implement rotational load shedding in areas like Hillbrow and Soweto, where most homes are illegally connected to the grid, causing substations to become overloaded and exploited.
Sikonathi Manthantsha from Eskom said there were no easy solutions to the problem.
DISPERSED FROM THE PROTESTERS
Meanwhile, Gauteng police said Snake Park residents who were protesting now had dispersed after taking to the streets for lack of electricity.
Police spokesman Captain Kay Makhubele said: “Police continue to monitor the situation in Snake Park after a community member closed the road since morning protesting the electricity. We have hired the councilor who participated with the leadership of the community. “
