CAPE TOWN – Stronger lockdown restrictions may come our way if South Africans don’t increase their COVID-19 security measures.
This is a warning from COVID-19 ministerial advisory committee member Professor Ian Sanne on Sunday.
Sanne, who is also the CEO of Right to Care, a non-governmental organization, emphasizes the increasing burden that the pandemic places on the healthcare sector.
“I think South Africa will have no choice but to block itself further if people don’t seriously practice social distancing.”
Sanne said studies were underway to weigh the effect of an increase in viral load against the clinical outcomes of COVID-19.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced last week that South African scientists have identified a variant of the coronavirus, and that the current second wave in the country is being driven by this.
Mkhize has expressed concern about complacency among young South Africans.
“It cannot be that our young people should only adhere to life-saving measures only after they have been controlled to do so. Therefore, we call on parents, caregivers and young people to understand that now it is not just about thinking in others or even yourself and therefore you yourself run the same risk of dying from COVID-19. “
