The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will open the process today for applications for the Special Social Relief Grant COVID-19 R350 for unemployed people.
The amount will be paid to eligible applications from May to October 2020.
“Regarding the special grant for social relief of distress COVID-19, we have returned, revised our systems and have strengthened the modus operandi. We believe we are ready to open the process today, ”said SASSA Executive Director Busisiwe Memela-Khambula.
At a virtual press conference on Monday, Memela-Khambula said the technology will be used to deliver services.
“Over time, we will be able to extend support to those who will not have access to technology. It is very important to note that in order for us to offer an efficient service; We are going to have to use technology even in areas that are far away. We are going to get people to offer support in those areas, ”he said.
She emphasized that SASSA would remain vigilant to avoid a situation in which people try to defraud the system.
The proof of residency requirement for the grant application has dropped, but applicants must still provide their residential address.
The grant is part of the R500 billion economic and social aid measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last month.
Applicants must be:
- Above the age of 18 years;
- Unemployed;
- You receive no income;
- Not receive any social subsidy;
- You do not receive any unemployment insurance benefits and you do not qualify for unemployment insurance benefits;
- Not receive a stipend from the National Student Financial Aid Plan; and
- Non-resident in a government-funded or subsidized institution.
Potential applicants must provide the following mandatory information for the processing of their applications:
- ID number;
- Name and surname captured in the ID (and initials);
- Gender and disability;
- Bank details: bank name and account number;
- Contact information: cell phone number;
- Residential address;

SASSA officials return to work
Meanwhile, Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu reported that 30% of SASSA officials return to work on a rotating basis to continue providing social services.
“We know that our offices were closed and this has affected several people who cannot receive our services. Services will exist starting this week, limited services will be provided at our local offices, our district and regional offices did not close at Level 5, ”said Memela-Khambula.
She said that SASSA’s offices will gradually open starting Monday, May 11.
“We will progressively open starting today to protect the most vulnerable members of society.”
Mondays and Tuesdays will be used to receive applications from seniors with priority for those who have just turned 60.
On Wednesday and Thursday, applications will be accepted for child support subsidy and foster care subsidies.
Priority will be given to caregivers with infants and in cases where the caregiver’s income circumstances have changed.
“I want to appeal to caregivers not to bring children to our offices. Leave the children at home, but be sure to bring all required documents. Home Affairs will be able to provide support in terms of birth certificates, ”said Memela-Khambula.
