The South African Post Office (SAPO) is currently repositioning its e-commerce strategy to be a global export engine and enhance intra-African trade under the new African Continental Free Trade Agreement, while shaping local trade.
The Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies said that the postal system around the world is a vital partner for electronic commerce, generally offering the most cost-effective delivery option given its wide presence.
“To that end, and as part of its role in growing the economy and creating much-needed jobs, the Post Office has reduced the backlog of international items ordered online to around three weeks and he hopes to eradicate it in the next month. ”Said the Ministry on Friday.
The Post Office plans to expand its role in e-commerce and intends to launch a platform for online shopping in the coming months, especially aimed at facilitating interaction between small artisans and merchants in South Africa and buyers.
Before the COVID-19 shutdown, the post office delivered about two million items per day.
“Given its huge and extensive infrastructure and presence in almost every corner of the country, including rural areas, there is a growing need for the government to use SAPO to improve the delivery of people-centered services.
“Those discussions are positively underway. This will go a long way towards making the post office financially sustainable, ”said Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.
The Minister joined the world in celebrating World Post Day, which is commemorated annually on October 9.
The aim of World Post Day is to raise awareness about the role of postal services in the daily lives of people and businesses, as well as their contribution to global social and economic development.
This year’s celebrations take place under the theme: “More than mail”, which resonates with the mandate of the Post Office.
The mandate includes promoting economic growth through the provision of postal, logistics and retail products and services at competitive prices.
