Sourav Ganguly, former Indian cricket captain, suffers a heart attack

Indian cricket chief Sourav Ganguly He was under observation at the hospital Sunday after a successful heart operation, doctors said, and wishes continued to pour in for the former star and the captain.

The 48-year-old, who tops the country’s mighty cricket table, suffered a heart attack during his morning exercise session on Saturday.

He was immediately taken to Woodlands Hospital in Calcutta, the capital of the state of West Bengal, where doctors found three blockages in his arteries, one of which needed a stent implant.

“Sourav Ganguly is now stable and without oxygen support after undergoing angioplasty. He had breakfast,” doctor Saroj Mandal told reporters outside the hospital.

“Genetic history, long-term stress and other factors may have caused the disease,” Mandal said, adding that a seven-member medical team is monitoring his health.

A crowd of supporters remained outside the hospital awaiting updates on “dad,” a term affectionately used for an older brother in Bengali.

India’s record hitter, Sachin Tendulkar, tweeted his support.

“I just learned about your ailment, Sourav. I hope that with each passing day brings you closer to a full and speedy recovery! Get well soon,” wrote the cricket legend.

India’s current alternate captain Ajinkya Rahane and regular captain Virat Kohli also tweeted their prayers.

Ganguly was unanimously elected chairman of the Indian Cricket Control Board, the sport’s most powerful body in the country, in 2019.

As head of the board, he was instrumental in organizing the Indian Premier League in the United Arab Emirates last year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The left-handed starter retired from cricket in 2008 after amassing 7,212 runs, including 16 centuries, the first at Lord’s on his debut.

He also scored 11,363 runs in 311 one-day internationals.
