Sony confirms PS4 to PS5 saved transfers and reveals incompatible PS4 games

Sony has confirmed that save data can be transferred from PS4 to PS5, in addition to listing ten games that will not be compatible with PlayStation 5.

On a new PlayStation support page, Sony states that “You can transfer digital games and save data from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using WiFi data transfer.” There is no information on whether PS4 cloud saves can be downloaded to a PS5 console.

Also, the backward compatibility instructions reveal that playing digitally purchased PS4 games will be just a case of downloading them from your game library to PS5, while the discs can simply be inserted (although an update may be required). The Instruction Notes Discs and Game Library are accessed from the PS5 UI ‘Game Center’, which will hopefully be shown by Sony in the coming weeks.

As for which games are backward compatible, Sony states once again that “the vast majority of the over 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles.” This time, however, the company has released a list of 10 “PS4 only” games, suggesting that only fewer than a dozen games will not be backward compatible. Those games are:

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Kuma’s Revenge Volume One
  • Isle of Man TT – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just deal with it!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: the journey
  • we sang
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe’s Diner

For games that are backward compatible, “select” PS4 games will benefit from Game Boost, which “can make PS4 games run at a higher or smoother frame rate.”

The page also notes that some features may not be present when playing PS4 games on PS5, such as the Share menu (replaced by the Create menu), PlayStation’s In-Game Live, and the PS4 tournaments feature. Additionally, some games “may have bugs or unexpected behaviors.” He also notes that the PS4 DualShock 4 controllers can be used with the PS5 to play PS4 games.
