Liverpool fans on Twitter provided a mixed reaction after Raheem Sterling called Joe Gomez’s mistake with England yesterday ‘careless’, as he told Sky Sports Football (09/05/20 7:20 pm).

Gareth Southgate’s 10 men beat Iceland 1-0 in their first UEFA Nations League match, but there was a penalty shootout drama towards the end, involving two of Liverpool and Manchester City’s star men.

Sterling was the first to step forward as he settled comfortably home from the point in injury time after a handball in the area.

But not long after, Gomez conceded a penalty, which was later horribly missed by former Aston Villa midfielder Birkir Bjarnason.

After the game, this is how Sterling assessed the situation, as he commented on Kyle Walker’s sending off and how they awarded the penalty right to death.

“We weren’t expecting the red card,” Sterling told Sky Sports. “But it happened and we kept playing soccer. We kept trying to create chances and we kept in touch, then we got the penalty at the end.

“We shouldn’t have awarded that sloppy penalty in the end. But in the end we were lucky. “

Some Liverpool fans praised the winger for his comments saying he was simply being honest in his post-match interview.

While others weren’t surprised, but felt it wasn’t necessary for him to call his teammate that way in public and noted that he wasn’t criticizing Walker for his silly second yellow.

There is no doubt that Gomez was lucky and was to blame for the way he took the penalty, but it is clear that he upsets a section of the Anfield faithful.

Gomez is perhaps England’s senior center-back now given that Harry Maguire is not currently playing, but he has yet to cement his place in the squad like so many of his defensive-minded teammates.
