BRIGHTON – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted Manchester United were lucky to escape with a 3-2 win at Brighton thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty, awarded in a VAR review after the final whistle sounded.
Brighton hit the wood five times and thought he had earned a deserved point when Solly March headed home to equal five minutes in injury time.
However, Neal Maupay’s hand was penalized by referee Chris Kavanagh after he consulted a pitch monitor, having flown at full time, and Fernandes converted from the spot in the 100th minute.
Pre-season hopes that United could challenge their biggest rivals Liverpool and Manchester City for the title were dispelled after a terrible display of losing 3-1 to Crystal Palace last weekend.
And Solskjaer’s men weren’t much better on the south coast with Brighton manager Graham Potter lamenting that “life isn’t fair” as United scored with their only shots on goal.
“We got away with it. Maybe we deserved one point, we didn’t deserve more,” Solskjaer said.
“We have to be honest enough to say they created the most opportunities. They had a lot of shots, they had great opportunities and that’s not what we want. We need to improve a lot in the coming weeks.”
Solskjaer again pointed to a shortened preseason for his team’s slow start, as United had just a month between the end of last season and the start of the new campaign.
“I do not question the spirit and character of the boys. The form, the aptitude and the form will come,” added Solskjaer. “We have a few weeks to catch up and the more games we play, we get better and better, and sharper and sharper.”
Leandro Trossard hit both posts with shots from outside the box, while Adam Webster’s looping header returned from the crossbar as Brighton made a brighter start.
