Johannesburg – Nearly 90 employees from nine state-owned entities (SOEs), which fall under the Department of Transportation, have been sitting at home doing nothing while pocketing a total of R18.4 million in wages.
This was revealed by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, who said that the 86 employees had been suspended for a combined period of 562 months.
Mbalula made the disclosure in response to parliamentary questions from DA MP Chris Hunsinger.
Hunsinger had asked about the number of employees at each entity who were currently on suspension, the combined number of months of suspended staff members, and the expense costs of all suspensions.
Mbalula’s responses showed that the South African Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa) has the highest number of suspended officials at 49.
In his response, Mbalula said that 12 employees were suspended at the South African Airports Company (Acsa) for a total of 84 months.
He said the cost of expenses for all currently suspended Acsa employees was R1 386,297.
Mbalula revealed that Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) had seven employees suspended for a total of 13 months.
“Six were suspended on June 2, 2019 and one was suspended on May 24, 2019. All cases must be completed by the end of August 2020.”
It said that salaries amounting to R4 999 959.44 had been paid to the suspended employees at the end of June.
The minister indicated that two employees were suspended in the Cross-Border Highway Transportation Agency (C-BRTA), one of them for 13 months and the other for 10 months.
“The cost to the company with respect to all the personnel currently suspended for the C-BRTA is R 4 322 818.08”.
The Highway Accident Fund (RAF) currently has nine employees suspended for a total of 40 months.
“The total cost of the company’s expenses with respect to all personnel currently suspended R1 942 648.99,” Mbalula said of RAF.
An employee of the Road Transport Infractions Agency was suspended for five months, at a cost of R109,525 in salary.
Mbalula also said that an employee had been suspended in the South African Maritime Safety Authority for 10 months, as of July 26, at a cost of R1 136 799.34.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority currently has one employee suspended for a period of nine months at a cost to the company of R68 403.01 per month, amounting to R615 627.09 for the period of nine months, it said.
“The employee is currently in a disciplinary hearing that is in the final stages and should conclude by the end of July 2020. The hearing was delayed due to the closure.”
Mbalula stated that Prasa had 49 employees suspended for 377 months combined at a cost of R $ 884,260.86.
Road Traffic Management Corporation has four employees currently suspended for 11 months.
“The cost of the company’s expenses with respect to all currently suspended personnel is R1 052 399.98,” he said.
