Soccer legend Diego Maradona admitted to hospital

Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona was admitted Monday to a clinic in La Plata, south of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

His doctor Leopoldo Luque made the announcement and told reporters that Maradona’s situation is not serious and that the former coach of the Argentine men’s national soccer team had not been admitted due to an emergency.

He did not give details but said that Maradona, who celebrated his 60th birthday last Friday, will undergo a series of medical tests. Luque said:

He is an elderly patient with many pressures in his life. It is a time when we must help him. It is very difficult to be Maradona.

He ruled out any possibility that Maradona had contracted the coronavirus that plagues Argentina.

Maradona, who has a history of drug and alcohol abuse and poor health, is considered high-risk if he contracts Covid-19.

The footballer has suffered two heart attacks in the past and has contracted hepatitis. Luque said the legendary footballer is fine although he can do much better. He said:

Diego is fine, but he can be much better. I didn’t find it the way I wanted to see it. I had a previous talk with him, I said: ‘We are going to a clinic to improve a little’ and he said: ‘Well, let’s go.

Diego Maradona led Argentina’s senior men’s team to World Cup glory in 1986 as captain. He is currently the coach of the Gimnasia club of the Argentine Super League.

On Friday of last week, he made a brief appearance at the club’s training ground on his birthday, but had obvious walking difficulties and had to be helped by his assistants after staying only 30 minutes.
