Despite all the talk about Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara, there hasn’t been much speculation about the entry of a central defender.

Thiago to Anfield is arguably the transfer saga of the summer and as of now the Reds, who reportedly refuse to pay Bayern Munich’s £ 27 million valuation, are no closer to getting it.

Liverpool have lost a senior defender this summer in the form of Dejan Lovren, sold to Zenit St Petersburg in a £ 11 million deal.

And Jamie Redknapp has hinted that this is also a department where soccer director Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp definitely need to get stronger.

Since Lovren left, Klopp has only Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez through seasoned central defense options.

Matip missed 20 games for Liverpool last season due to injury, while Gomez has a troubling history of long-term ankle and knee problems.

In theory, Klopp is an injury away from one of them, aside from having to rely on a young man like Sepp van den Berg, and Redknapp has told Sky Sports that they could use another body for that role.

He said: “History suggests that you have to go out and sign one or two players to strengthen the squad, and I think people have said that in recent weeks. “Why haven’t Liverpool tried to catch Thiago or put in one or two players to strengthen the central area?”

“You’ve lost Dejan Lovren and that leaves you pretty short with just Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk. From his point of view, he just hopes not to injure himself because if they had any injuries in that area they would be short. Especially when Gomez has had injuries and Matip can’t always play the full season, you might think it could be an area where they could have trouble. “

Liverpool begin their defense of their Premier League title with a visit to Leeds United on Saturday.
