Durban – KwaZulu Natal police opened an investigation after a 6-month-old boy was found dead in his cot on Monday.
According to police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala, a baby is alleged to have been sleeping in the crib when the curtain, used to protect the baby from mosquito bites, wrapped around his face and body.
Gwala said the baby was pronounced dead at the scene and the circumstances surrounding the incident were being investigated.
Prem Balram, director of Reaction Unit SA, said they responded to the scene just before noon on Monday.
He said the boy did not respond after being evaluated.
Balram said the crib where the boy had been sleeping was allegedly covered with a mosquito curtain to prevent the baby from being bitten by mosquitoes.
“According to the father, he fell asleep and when he returned to see how the baby was, he found the curtain rolled around his neck. The child was unresponsive and had cyanosis. “
