Six people were killed inside a tavern that caught fire after being bombarded with gasoline in Sweetwater, outside King William’s Town, Eastern Cape police said Friday.

The incident occurred on Thursday night.

“It is alleged that two unknown men arrived at the eShop after 9 pm and ordered everyone to leave. Few obeyed the instructions and went out, ”said police spokesman Col Sibongile Soci.

“It is further alleged that the two unknown men threw a gasoline bomb inside the premises, locked customers inside and left the place in a burning hell. The fire brigade was called and they managed to control the flames and saved some people who were trapped inside ”, added Soci.

Four people were injured in the fire and were taken to Gray Hospital for further treatment. Police were investigating six counts of murder and arson.

“The cause of the attack is unknown at the moment and is part of the investigation. A 72-hour activation plan was initiated while the case was turned over to the Hawks for further investigation and handling, ”Soci said.
