JOHANNESBURG – The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has dismissed claims by the fired Gauteng MEC Bandile Masuku that he is venturing into a political game.

Masuku was fired by Prime Minister David Makhura following the findings of a preliminary report from the SIU.

The report details how Masuku did not comply with the Constitution and the regulations contained in the Public Finance Management Law.

The SIU launched the investigation following widespread accusations of wrongdoing in the procurement of COVID-19 PPE.

Masuku has denied wrongdoing, adding that the accusations are unfounded.

The former MEC has also accused the SIU of giving in to public pressure and venturing into political games.

But SIU’s Kaizer Kganyago said this was not true: “We also deny the fact that he says we are playing politics because that is not what we do. Our investigations are based on allegations and our results are based on evidence. We do not investigate people, we investigate processes ”.
