The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) raided the offices of the National Lottery Commission (NLC) on Tuesday as part of its investigation into allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
“We are here. Yesterday we were granted a search warrant [Monday] come and get documents from the commission and from all the other areas where we can find the documents, ”SIU spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said from the commission’s offices in Pretoria.
He said the search and seizure operation was related to an investigation they were doing under Proclamation 32 of 2020.
The proclamation was signed in October and published in November.
“We are being asked, through the allegations that were brought, to investigate malpractice and mismanagement at the Lottery Commission,” he said.
“We are in the process of gathering information to make sure we analyze it. The proclamation says that we must investigate all transactions from January 1, 2014 to the date of the proclamation.
“We are looking at the concession of the disbursements that were made,” Kganyago said.
Some of the allegations that the SIU is investigating at the NLC include:
- Serious mismanagement in connection with the affairs of the NLC;
- Illegal appropriation or spending of money or public property;
- Misconduct or illegal conduct of employees or officials of the NLC;
- Illegal, irregular or unapproved acts, transactions, measures or purchasing practices that affect state property; Y
- Intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property.
