SIU raids Northwest municipality for PPE corruption

The SIU said it had evacuated the building.

“The SIU investigation in the municipality of Matlosana focuses on the acquisition or contracting of PPE Covid-19 for goods, works and services.”

The investigation also examined the construction, remodeling, leasing, occupation and use of real property during or with respect to the national state of disaster by or on behalf of the municipality.

In its investigation, the SIU is also looking at payments made in a way that was:

  • it is not fair, competitive, transparent, equitable or profitable;
  • contrary to the applicable legislation, manuals, guidelines, practical notes, circulars or instructions issued by the national or provincial Treasury;
  • carried out or facilitated through the improper or illegal conduct of employees or officials of state institutions; any other person or entity, to corruptly or improperly benefit themselves or any other person;
  • fraudulent, and any related unauthorized, irregular, or fruitless and wasteful expenses incurred by state institutions or the state.
