CAPE TOWN – The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has run into some hurdles in its investigations into illicit acts related to the country’s response to COVID-19.
The unit is investigating contracts signed during the coronavirus outbreak for the provision of services and goods such as personal protective equipment.
SIU’s Kaiser Kganyago seemed as shocked, as many South Africans, by the extent of the corruption claims marring the response to the coronavirus.
The total value of the contracts the investigators were reviewing amounts to about 7.5 billion rand.
Kganyago said that for the most part municipalities, which were also being investigated, are cooperating, except for two in the Western Cape.
“We also had resistance from the Matzikama municipality, but due to that investigation, we were following up with some of the suppliers. There were three suppliers that were part of the investigation in Matzikama ”.
The mayor of the municipality of Cederberg, Sylvia Qunta, also threatens to go to court, alleging that a raid on municipal offices last week in Clanwilliam was carried out without a warrant.
Kganyago denied it.
The SIU is investigating more than 700 companies.
