Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu took stock of the situation and spoke with some of the thousands of people who lost everything in last week’s fire.

CAPE TOWN – Lindiwe Sisulu visited Masiphumelele on Monday afternoon to see for herself the extent of the devastation caused by last week’s fire.
The fire tore through part of the sprawling informal settlement, destroying more than 1,000 homes and leaving thousands homeless and with only the clothes they were wearing.
The Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation spent time talking to residents and promised to do something to find a permanent solution to their housing problems.

He promised residents that the government was working on a permanent plan and that this would be discussed tonight.
“It is the third time that I am in Masiphumelele after a tragedy like this, so I hope this time is the end of these tragedies.”
Cape Town officials are still busy clearing the area and Sisulu promised that he would reach out to other departments to help residents.
“I will also make sure to contact my counterpart, [Social Development Minister] Lindiwe Zulu to make sure she’s also part of the solution to give us all the support Social Development can provide. “
Those affected by the fire had hoped to begin rebuilding in time for Christmas, but the city said today that the site is likely to be ready by the middle of next week.
