The future of Mamelodi Sundowns star Gaston Sirino remains uncertain with growing ties to a mega-money outlet from Masandawana.

Al Ahly have been interested in the Uruguayan star for a while now, however the Egyptian champions now have an ace up their sleeve with newly appointed coach Pitso Mosimane.

It was Mosimane who brought Gaston Sirino from Uruguay to South Africa and the duo had great success together at Mamelodi Sundowns leaving Sirino with an added incentive to join the mighty Al Ahly.

Sirino agrees with Al Ahly

Gaston Sirino has reached an agreement in principle to join Al Ahly according to reports and published figures suggest that Mamelodi Sundowns is seeking more than R60 million for its star player.

“There is an agreement for Sirino to join Al Ahly and I understand that he will arrive in the next transfer window in time for the second round of the Champions League.” a source told Kick-Off.

As for foreigners, I don’t think [Aliou] Badji gets along very well with Mosimane and could go out to open a [foreign] share spot.

“The only thing keeping the deal from happening now in this current window is that the Sundowns are waiting for more money.”

Gaston to return for Sundowns after international period – Mngqithi

Gaston Sirino has yet to appear at the Mamelodi Sundowns since his opening day MTN8 loss to Bloemfontein Celtic and head coach Manqoba Mngqithi dismissed ideas that the star is being sidelined due to continued transfer speculation.

“He should be ready to play the next game after the FIFA break,” Mngqihti told reporters after his team’s 2-0 win over Cape Town.

“We were just being cautious because he had a grade two hamstring injury. Two and a half weeks have passed.

“We are hopeful that when we come back from the FIFA break, he will be back with the team because light training has already started.”

While it remains to be seen if Mamelodi Sundowns will be able to keep their star player, if the deal goes through, we will likely pursue the largest inter-African transfer fee to date.
