A group of around three hundred protesters stormed the court in the small farming town in search of the two suspects who were in custody.
The two suspects arrested for the murder of young Free State farmer Brendin Horner were captured in Fateng-Tse-Ntsho Township, outside Paul Roux.
Paul Roux community leader Johnny Maseko says the two suspects, Sekwetje Isaiah Mahlamba, 32, and Sekola Piet Matlaletsa, 44, are linked to a stock theft syndicate in the area.
“It’s a stock theft that went terribly wrong,” says Maseko.
Maseko, who served a 17-year term as chairman of the Community Police forum, says the suspects are well known to him and have topped police stock theft lists for years.
“I worked on it for many years, trying to make it happen,” he says.
Although community members have said the murder was likely related to the area’s stock theft syndicate, the involvement of political parties such as the EFF and the ANC Youth League has apparently added to racial tensions in the community. .
Mahlamba and Matlaletsa will appear again in Senekal’s court of first instance on October 16, 2020.
