KWAZULU-NATAL – KwaZulu-Natal Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala is expected to lead a high-level provincial government delegation to Normandien in Newcastle, where a farmer couple was killed last month.
Glen Rafferty, sixty-three, and his wife Vida, 60, were ambushed after returning from a social outing to their country home four weeks ago.
In a statement, Zikalala said the killings show the resurgence of tensions between residents of agricultural communities in the province.
About three years ago, the Normandy community made headlines after four farm workers were shot and injured while protesting outside their employer’s farm.
Zikalala said that tensions in farming communities constantly flare in different areas of the province.
He said this means that there is still deep-seated anger among farmers, workers and residents.
The prime minister plans to use his visit to discuss possible solutions to problems affecting farming communities.
Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele is expected to visit the community on Monday to give an update on the Rafferty killings.
