Johannesburg: Shoprite / Checkers Group has confirmed that it has terminated its relationship with Unilever’s TRESemmé brand and will phase out its nearly 3,000 stores on the African continent.

In a brief statement to IOL on Wednesday, a Shoprite / Checkers Group spokesperson said: “We can confirm that TRESemmé products have been recalled from sale in our stores.”

Shoprite Group, which owns stores such as Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Shoprite and the U-Save brands, is the second group after Clicks Group announced Tuesday that it would ditch TRESemmé and replace it with local hair care products.

This follows an ad by TRESemmé on the Clicks website showing black women’s hair as frizzy, dull, dry and damaged, while describing white hair as normal, fine and flat.

The announcement prompted the EFF to descend on hundreds of Clicks stores across the country in protest.

On Wednesday, Clicks stores across the country closed to allow workers to receive counseling after some had allegedly been intimidated during protests.

Also on Tuesday, Clicks obtained a provisional injunction that prevented the EFF from threatening or intimidating Clicks’ staff and clients. The injunction allows for peaceful protests.

Clicks is also committed to working with the government to develop the local beauty market.

An anonymous senior Clicks executive resigned Tuesday, while non-executive director Nonkululeko Gobodo asked the company to name the senior executive and also implored Unilever to name the advertising agency and TRESemmé executives responsible for the announcement that has had detrimental consequences. for various brands, including Clicks, TRESemmé and Unilever.
