Shots were fired as thousands of protesters from Senekal and across the country gathered at Senekal Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning to attend the first appearance of the two suspects linked to the death of Brendin Horner.

Protesters tried to reach suspects in the court’s holding cells, sparking clashes with the police, while the media were also attacked and assaulted by farmers unhappy with their presence.

Over the weekend, two suspects, ages 32 and 43, were arrested after the body of Horner, 22, was found in the Paul Roux area on Friday morning.

The grounds of the Senekal Magistrates Court were not easily accessible due to the thousands of protesters who gathered around the court to show their support against the farm killings.

The proceedings had begun peacefully but quickly turned violent shortly after the case against the suspects was postponed until October 16.

Trucks, cars, motorcycles and horses decorated with white crosses and signs of ‘Stop now’ and ‘Ons es gatvol’ drove in kilometer-long convoys from the outskirts of the city to head to the pitch.

Outside the court, representatives from AfriForum and other interest groups addressed the crowd, as well as representatives from political parties such as the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Freedom Plus Front (FFP).

Several motorcycle clubs also attended the protest.

The process outside the court began with a moment of silence for all the victims, farmers and workers of the attacks on the farm.
