Willah Mudolo, the only co-defendant of self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri to remain behind bars, allegedly tried to flee SA three times for Dubai despite knowing there was a pending court case against him.

Colonel Daniel Marais of the Hawks told the Pretoria magistrates court on Monday how the Zambian citizen, who was in South Africa illegally, tried to flee the country on September 21, October 13 and October 16.

Marais told the court that every time Mudolo tried to leave, he received an alert on his cell phone about an airport check-in.

On the first occasion, Marais said that after receiving the alert, he contacted Mudolo’s attorney from BDK attorneys, who said he would speak with Mudolo. On the second occasion, he reported again to Mudolo’s lawyer and abandoned his travel plans.

The third attempt resulted in his arrest at the airport on October 17, shortly after authorities arrested his wife Zethu, a co-defendant in the affair, at his residence.

It was after this third “escape offer” that Mudolo’s initial attorney allegedly told Marais that he would no longer represent him in court.
