After isolated rains in several provinces of the country over the weekend, more weather alerts have been issued preventively, and severe thunderstorms are expected on Monday, the South African Meteorological Service (SAWS) confirmed.

SAWS issued a Level 2 Yellow Alert for Free State, western Mpumalanga, southwest Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal, which were expected to be the hardest hit by the thunderstorms.

The alert warns of “heavy rains that will cause localized flooding of susceptible roads and low-lying areas,” as well as “traffic disruptions.”

“Especially in the afternoon rush hours due to poor visibility and high winds that can cause structural damage to infrastructure can be expected in the southeastern parts of Limpopo, the northeastern parts of Mpumalanga, the southeastern parts of the Free State, the Northeastern parts of the Eastern Cape, as well as the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal this afternoon. “

Motorists were urged to drive carefully in rainy weather, turn on headlights and slow down, and avoid low-water bridges.

All home insurers saw a surge in storm damage claims in the north of the country in late October, warning homeowners should take precautions now that summer storm season is upon us.

Insurer Dialdirect has offered these tips for staying safe in bad weather conditions:

  • Check structures around your home for weak spots, clear debris from gutters, secure items that could become deadly projectiles, and cut down dead trees and branches.
  • Heavy rains are often associated with lightning. Install surge protection plugs and / or unplug appliances before the storm hits.
  • If you are in an area prone to hail, make sure the structures around your home can support the additional weight and that you are equipped to clear any hail build-up. Reinforce structures where necessary.
