  • The uncle of one of the defendants in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case says that there is something strange about the matter and that it involves money to protect the real culprits.
  • The five men charged with Meyiwa’s murder appeared before the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Friday.
  • Gerrie Nel from AfriForum’s private prosecution unit says they are satisfied with the way the defendants are implicated in the murder.

While AfriForum’s private prosecution unit believes the reasons given for how five men arrested for their role in the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa make sense, their families are unconvinced.

S’tembu Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa and Sifokuhle Sifiso Nkani Ntuli appeared in Boksburg Magistrates Court before Magistrate Hans Havenga on Friday.

They face charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, violation of Section 3 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 (possession of firearms), and violation of Section 90 of Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 (possession of).

The men first appeared in October after Police Minister Bheki Cele announced a breakthrough in the long-running unsolved case dating back to 2014.

Meyiwa was shot and killed in the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, actress and musician Kelly Khumalo, on October 26, 2014.

Among those present in court on Friday was Sifiso Ntuli’s uncle, Scelo.

Speaking outside of court, Scelo said that while they weren’t going to say much about the case, they believed something was strange and that “the truth was hidden.”

Uncle said:

I won’t say much because we don’t walk with [Sifiso] but we believe that the truth is hidden. We believe that there are some people who are being protected and we do not feel comfortable that the people who were present when the crime was committed were not implicated and questioned.

He added that based on the information they knew about the case, one person was being sought, and now many people were involved, leaving them confused about how their son became involved.

Scelo believes that it is about money to “prevent the truth from coming out.”

“Sifiso is also not well because he does not know why he is being accused, but I think more details will be revealed as the case progresses.

He added that his only hope was that the person who pulled the trigger would one day be arrested so the case could be closed.

“It would be very sad if a wrong person ended up being arrested because they have no money. We are really hurt and we think there is money involved to hide other information,” Scelo said.

Gerrie Nel of AfriForum said he had extensive briefings from police management and was happy with the information and how the defendants were linked to the case.

“I understand it [how the accused are linked] and I think the only remaining question, since I am here, is the mastermind. Really, it’s just the process to ensure that the mastermind appears in court, “he said.

Nel said he had thought there was enough information to arrest and charge the mastermind and was disappointed that they were not yet brought to court.

Nel said: “But what I can reveal is that the police have informed me [and] I have contact with the NPA. While I’m here, we have more evidence against the brain than last time. It is a fact. The police discovered more evidence, so the case for the arrest of the mastermind is much stronger. “
