The five suspects in the 2014 murder of Senzo Meyiwa appear before the Boksburg Magistrates Court.

  • Five men are accused of being involved in the murder of former Bafana goalkeeper Bafana Senzo Meyiwa.
  • There was drama at his first court appearance when four of the men refused to enter the dock.
  • They told the court that they were being used as scapegoats and knew nothing about the case.

The five men accused of being involved in the murder of former Bafana goalkeeper Bafana Senzo Meyiwa will appear in Boksburg Magistrates Court on Friday.

Pregnant Muikawuk S’Tembu Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphisa and Sifokuhle Sifiso Nkani Ntuli face five charges, including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, violation of Section 3 of Law 60 of Firearms Control. 2000 (possession of a firearm) and violation of Section 90 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 (possession of ammunition).

They first appeared in court last month after Police Minister Bheki Cele announced a breakthrough in the long-running unsolved case.

The arrests were made on October 26, six years after Meyiwa was shot and killed in the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, actress and musician Kelly Khumalo.

According to court documents, it is believed that while Meyiwa was at Khumalo’s home that day at around 8:00 p.m., two people broke in with a gun and a knife and demanded money and cell phones from the victims.

At the time of the incident, Khumalo’s mother, Gladness, Longwe Thwala, who was Zandile Khumalo’s boyfriend, Meyiwa’s friend, Tumelo Madlala, as well as Mthokozisi Thwala were also present.

A fight ensued and Meyiwa was shot in the chest.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Botshelong Health Center.

The first appearance of the five defendants before Judge Hans Havenga was a great occasion in which four, Sibiya, Mncube, Maphisa and Ntuli, appeared without legal representation, saying that they did not see the need for a lawyer because they did not know anything about the case.

The men, who are currently serving sentences for other crimes, claimed they were wrongly implicated.

According to the indictment, they are from KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Northwest.

The matter was postponed until Friday for the state to submit a final presentation for the matter to be transferred to the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.

A document leaked during the latest appearance also revealed that Kelly Khumalo’s cell phone records can be obtained as part of the investigation.

The document had been part of the communication between the investigating officers and established that the communication by cell phone between the various defendants before, during or after the crime must be established together with the location of the towers.

News24 previously reported that Kelly Khumalo’s attorney, Magdalene Moonsamy, said she had not been charged or implicated in the matter.

“We wish to put on record that our client is not involved or accused in this matter and, therefore, is not a suspect,” the lawyer said in a statement.

Moonsamy said they noticed the leaked document and that it was done with bad intentions.
