Johannesburg – A high-ranking ANC politician, who has been linked to Bosasa through testimony in the commission of inquiry into the state capture, will appear in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court Thursday morning.

The former ANC deputy, who was chairman of the portfolio committee, turned himself in to the police at Alberton police station.

He will appear in court to be formally charged with fraud and corruption. Only then will your identity be made public.

Thursday’s court appearance follows extensive investigations by the Directorate of Investigations, which was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate the allegations arising from the long-running investigation that is chaired by Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo.

Sindisiwe Twala, spokesperson for the Investigation Directorate, confirmed that the ANC politician was arrested as part of an initiative led by the Investigation Directorate.

He said the politician faced charges of fraud and corruption and that more details would be released after his court appearance.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Hawks arrested six suspects during a simultaneous operation in Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng on allegations of fraud and corruption in connection with the Free State 2014 asbestos project.

“Among those arrested are three high-ranking government officials, three businessmen and five companies. The defendants face 60 charges that include corruption, fraud, money laundering in violation of the Law on Prevention and Combating Corrupt Activities, as well as contravention of the Public Finance Management Law “, confirmed the national spokesman of the Hawks, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

The arrests on Wednesday and the appearance of the former ANC deputy in court Thursday are expected to be the first in a series of cases stemming from testimony before the Zondo commission.

The Zondo commission heard last year how the ANC politician received more than R500,000 in alleged bribes from the controversial Bosasa group.

The money was used to pay college fees for the politician’s daughters, the politician told the commission last year. He also denied it was a bribe, but instead said it was a loan.
