The 51-year-old man who was arrested in the wake of the riots at the Senekal Court of First Instance has also been charged with attempted murder and violation of the Anti-Terrorism Law.

The defendant made his first appearance on Friday, in the same court that he is accused of assaulting. A court order was issued not to be named until the result of his bail request.

According to the provisional charge sheet, the man has been charged with malicious damage to property, public violence, attempted murder, and violation of the Law for the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorism and Related Activities.

The defendant is alleged to have attended a farmers’ meeting on Tuesday prior to the court appearance of the two men accused of murdering 21-year-old farm manager Brendin Horner.

At the meeting, he allegedly incited the crowd to fetch the suspects from the court’s holding cells.

Chaos broke out when a small group of people broke into the court building. A police vehicle rolled over and caught fire during the riot.

The attempted murder charge stems from allegations that the defendant attempted to set fire to the detention cells and from the two shots fired in court.

However, the investigator in the matter stated in the bail request that he did not know who had fired the shots.

It was also recorded in the court file that the man had assaulted the two defendants in the Horner case with a flat iron bar that he had used to enter the cells.

The State said that the two defendants in the Horner affair were injured and later taken to hospital for treatment.

However, according to the defense, they have two witnesses who were also in the detention cells who would testify that the defendant was not part of the action.

The application of the bond continues.
