Two people have been treated for smoke inhalation after Cape Gate Hospital, located in Brackenfell, caught fire Monday night.

According to the Cape Town Fire and Rescue department, they received an emergency call at approximately 8:00 p.m.

Firefighters from Kraaifontein, Durbanville, Brackenfell and Bellville were on the scene, Fire and Rescue spokesman Jermaine Carelse said.

He said the first floor of the hospital section has been evacuated.

“At this stage, two people were treated for smoke inhalation and no other injuries were reported,” Carelse said.

He said a fire safety inspector has been asked to find out the cause of the fire.

“The flames that [were] visible in the videos that are circulating [on social media] In fact, they were two water tanks on the side of the building that was also on fire, ”he added.

“Initial reports suggest that it was the warehouse area on the first floor and two water tanks outside the building that were on fire.”

The fire was extinguished shortly after 10 p.m. and crews were able to clear the accumulated areas of smoke.
