  • The vehicles of a Cape Town luxury car dealership were wrecked by a gang of about 40 men.
  • A large group of men can be seen in a video descending from the dealership.
  • Police have not ruled out the possibility of extortion while tracking down the suspects.

A Cape Town car dealership was attacked by a large group of men who wrecked vehicles on the dealership floor on Wednesday.

In a video of the incident, the men descend on the store that specializes in buying and selling luxury vehicles and high-performance cars.

After assaulting a man, they fan out and some begin to wreck some of the vehicles. One of them stands in the doorway with a gun.

They enter the office in an annex and then go back outside, and walk away from the scene.

Western Cape Police spokesman Noloyiso Rwexana said the incident at The Toy Shop involved about 40 men striking the bodies and lights of eight vehicles at the Brooklyn dealership.

“The possibility that the incident is related to extortion cannot be ruled out,” Rwexana said.

“Police detectives are following leads to track down the suspects involved in the incident,” he said.

Last year, Police Minister Bheki Cele went to Long Street bars and restaurants in the CBD for an on-site visit of establishments claiming they were forced to pay protection money to collectors who threatened them if they failed they paid.

At the time, Cele warned that the illegal venture of forcing people to pay protection money was spreading beyond the CBD, and in some cases it was reaching out to building managers.
