Video images of a “wandering” corrections officer are circulating on social media after he allegedly attempted to smuggle contraband, tied around his waist, into the Tswelopele Correctional Center in Kimberley.

The incident took place on September 9, 2020, said Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo.

“It was an internal operation after a tip and our officials acted with the necessary speed and managed to catch the culprit. The investigation is ongoing and the offender is currently suspended,” he added.

Nxumalo said the department was “shocked” and “aggrieved” by the incident.

“Therefore, we have assumed the duty to eradicate criminal behavior among those who tarnish our position and reputation in society. We refuse to allow a few bad apples to reverse the gains we have made,” he said.

“Wandering officials involved in the smuggling ship and other crimes are not sparing mercy.”

DCS is conducting an internal investigation and a criminal case has been opened.
