South Africa’s SABC 1 viewers are eagerly awaiting to see 60-year veteran news anchor Noxolo Grootboom one last time as an era ends on television screens.

Grootboom will read his latest television newsletter on isiXhosa at SABC Iindaba after having done so for over three decades.

And viewers are waiting to hear Grootboom’s legendary closing: “Ndinithanda nonke emakhaya,” which loosely translates to “I love you all at home.”

On Tuesday afternoon, those counting down to his swan song expressed disappointment when it was announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa would address the nation at the same time as his newsletter at 7:00 p.m.

They begged the president to give the announcer a moment to shine one last time.

Ramaphosa was expected to update the nation on developments in the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic before Easter weekend.

And, to everyone’s delight, the Presidency later sent out an updated announcement saying it would move the president’s speech by 30 minutes to allow Grootboom final approval.

“The time for the address has been moved from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to allow SABC viewers to see the final bulletin of veteran newsreader Noxolo Grootboom as she retires after 37 years.”

The announcement left the veteran speechless and teary-eyed.

A video posted on Twitter by the journalist, Yolisa Njamela, showed an emotional Grootboom, covering her mouth, as if she couldn’t believe the news.

Njamela had previously posted another video, showing a nice gesture from a woman, named Nombuyiselo Zinco, who traveled by bus from Gqeberha to Johannesburg on Monday night to deliver an outfit for the announcer to wear when she retires.

The woman had asked if she could make the outfit for her, Njamela said in her tweet.

Channel24 previously reported that Grootboom grew up in Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape and began her career at SABC as a typist before going on the air.

He also anchored funeral services for the deceased fighting stalwarts Nelson Mandela in 2013 and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in 2018.
