2021 will be a great year for Nissan South Africa as the automaker prepares to produce the Navara locally for the first time. The current Navara was launched locally in 2017 and hit the market with a unique suspension setup – a five-link coil suspension at the rear.

It was a completely new approach to the South African market as the bakkies in our market are all from installed crossbows. But for the Navara, its coil suspension meant it had SUV ride quality – or so it was supposed to be. The Navara had a good ride quality, thanks to this type of setup, but it never resulted in the bakkie having the best ride quality when the loading dock was full.

With the new bakkie on the horizon, Nissan will address several of these issues and the automaker hopes the bakkie will find greater success in our market. In the video above, Nissan documents the last eight decades of bakkie production and ends with a dark silhouette of the next Navara.

While information on the new bakkie is still relatively scant, we know that the bakkie will have a new front end and grille, along with new headlights. The headlights, as reflected in the image, feature four individual LEAD groups, surrounded by daytime running LEDs. On the engine front, Nissan is expected to continue with the 2.3-liter turbo diesel, but Nissan is rumored to add a turbo to improve performance and fuel efficiency.

More information on the new Nissan Navara will be announced on November 5, 2020 when the bakkie is revealed. Currently, in South Africa, the Navara range consists of 10 models, all powered by the 2.3-liter engine. The power outputs throughout the range are rated at 140 kW and 450 Nm. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox. The bakkie is available in a rear-wheel drive or 4×4 configuration.

The new 2021 Nissan Navara will be launched in South Africa in April next year.
