On Tuesday, the K9 unit of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) recovered a vehicle allegedly hijacked after a high-speed chase on the N12 motorway.
Video footage shows Toyota Fortuner entering and exiting traffic on the busy highway before the driver loses control of the vehicle and hurtles down an embankment.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the car was hijacked on Impala Road near the N12 in Protea Glen, Soweto.
Patrol officers saw the car with only one occupant.
“Officers stopped the vehicle, but instead of stopping the driver accelerated, driving recklessly and trying to ram the police vehicle off the highway. Shots were fired and the driver lost control, crashing into a stockade of business premises on Boundary Road. in Oakdene, “Fihla said.
The man tried to flee on foot after crashing the vehicle. The police, however, arrested him shortly after.
He was arrested and detained at the Moffatview Police Station for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle. Later the car was booked on the Aeroton SAPS pound.
