  • The hostel said this “once in a lifetime experience” does not pose a risk to clients at any time.

Guests at the Singita Ebony Lodge at the Sabi Sands Game Reserve in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, got more than their money’s worth when they approached a leopard in the reception area on Sunday.

The proud member of South Africa’s Big 5 paid an unexpected visit and leisurely walked past the living room furniture, before climbing a few steps, back into the foliage surrounding the building.

Reg Calmeyer of Roar Africa managed to capture the anomaly on video, which was described as a “once in a lifetime” experience.

The hostel described it as an “impressive moment”.

“The leopard was seen stalking an antelope in the riverbed in front of the lodge, before being detected by a troop of vervet monkeys. It proceeded to walk through the deck area and quickly wandered away from the lodge to avoid detection.

No danger

“This leopard did not pose any danger at any time, and we had the privilege of witnessing this incredible animal walk quietly back into the bush,” the shelter said in a statement.

“We strongly discourage close encounters with wildlife at any time, and we have strict security protocols for staff and guests in case this occurs naturally, such as in this scenario.

“We are committed to handling all situations responsibly and briefly, and we inform guests extensively about the safety around wildlife encounters at the lodge.”
