Here’s what 16-year-old Nathaniel Bradley Julies’ grandfather James Julies had to say about his grandson, who was allegedly shot to death by Eldorado Park police on Wednesday.
The grandfather was speaking at the family home on Friday after a visit from Police Minister Bheki Cele.
Young Nathaniel’s death has sparked anger in the suburb, and residents have called on the police who allegedly shot him to face the law.
IPID is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On Thursday, angry residents clashed with police, blocking and blocking roads saying they wanted justice for the teenager’s death.
Nathaniel had Down syndrome.
Julies said her grandson had done nothing wrong and was alone when he was shot point-blank before he was dragged into the police van.
He added that Nathaniel also drowned while being dragged into the police van.
“That the life of the police was never in danger, he couldn’t say why he shot the poor boy, what did the boy do?”
Grandpa said:
My pain is in the way my boy got shot. They shot him point-blank, he fell under the truck, they dragged him out. He is a 16-year-old boy with Down syndrome. He does not know what happens [on] around him. We have to fit into their world. You have to understand what he is saying.
Julies said the family appreciated the support they had received after the outrage the boy’s death had sparked in the suburb and on social media.
However, he added that the family also needed space as they prepared for the burial, adding that many people, including funeral directors and lawyers, had offered to help them.

Julies said police did not help the family either after the incident. She said it was a mission for them to receive a case number and no officer had gone to the family and the place where the boy was shot to investigate.

Cele said that if investigations found the police wrong, they would face the full power of the law.
He added that, however, he was waiting for the IPID investigation to conclude before action is taken against any police officers.
No official has been suspended at this time, Cele said.
“We have to re-establish relations between the groups. We cannot allow ourselves to break the relationship between the police and the community, otherwise that leaves a great void for criminals,” said the minister.
Cele said police weren’t supposed to shoot residents, but things could get out of hand when residents themselves incite violence.
