  • Two suspects were arrested Wednesday by the EMPD and turned over to SAPS in Springs, a police spokesman said.

Images of a man detained by agents from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) in Springs circulated on social media this week. In the video, one of the officers points a rifle at the man who is being apprehended.

Onlookers can be heard asking the officer if he would shoot the man “point blank”, at which point he said he would. It is alleged that the suspect attempted to evade arrest and assaulted one of the officers.

A police spokesperson confirmed that EMPD arrested two suspects on Wednesday and turned them over to SAPS.

“The couple is expected to appear today [Thursday] before the Springs Magistrates Court on charges of: resisting arrest, intimidation and crime, libel, “said Brig. Mathapelo Peters.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said they turned the case over to SAPS.

EMPD’s internal affairs unit is also investigating the incident.

Speculation has been made on social media about the events leading up to the incident, but the EMPD or SAPS have not revealed anything official.
