The KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt for a group of heavily armed criminals who robbed a jewelry store and took an undisclosed amount of money and jewelry.
Police confirmed that the brazen robbery took place at Narandas Jewelers in the bustling Gateway Mall in Durban.
According to Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, a police spokesman, the theft of the company occurred at 10:00 on Sunday.
“It is alleged that at 10:00 today a group of heavily armed men entered the jewelry store in a shopping center and took an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry.
“No shots were fired and no injuries were reported. A commercial theft case will be opened at the Durban North Police Station for investigation,” Mbhele said.
Dramatic CCTV footage of the incident shows eight men running into the store and terrorizing two female employees. Two armed men with a merchant and a customer can be seen as hostages, at gunpoint.
Other gang members can be seen taking all the jewelry out of the glass display cases and putting it in bags.
In another CCTV video clip, another store employee, who had been in the office at the back of the store, can be seen trying to prevent thieves from entering the room.
One of the suspects managed to kick in the door and the staff member was also taken hostage.
Shards of glass could be seen at the entrance to the store, apparently as a result of thieves attempting to enter the store.
The thieves are still at large.
