The top national police officer, Lt. General Bonang Mgwenya, appeared in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of corruption, fraud, theft and money laundering.

This comes after his arrest during a pre-dawn raid on his home Monday morning.

His arrest is related to the supply of emergency alert equipment to the South African Police Service in 2017.

“The contract price and the exposure to the police treasury was 191 million rand. However, 65 million rand was paid to the service provider, Instrumentation for Traffic Law Enforcement (Pty) Ltd.

“The payment of 22 million rand was stopped at the advanced stage of the Investigation Directorate (ID) investigation into the matter,” ID’s national spokesperson Sindisiwe Twala said in a statement on Monday.

She is the thirteenth defendant in the matter.

Several other police officers have already been detained, including the former acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane and the former Gauteng police commissioners and deputy police commissioners.
