The executive mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality, Busisiwe Modisakeng, died on Friday morning after a brief illness.
Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning and Cogta Lebogang Maile announced Modisakeng’s death in a statement. Modisakeng, who was 60 years old, became mayor of Sedibeng in 2016 after local government elections.
“On behalf of the Gauteng provincial government, headed by Prime Minister David Makhura, we extend our deepest condolences to the Modisakeng family, their colleagues at exco and their organization, the African National Congress,” Maile said.
Before her appointment as Mayor of Sedibeng, Modisakeng was the speaker for the municipality. She has also served three terms as mayor of the local Lesedi municipality.
Maile said he began his political career in the South African Student Congress before taking positions in the South African Trade Union Congress and the South African Communist Party.
“His sudden disappearance robs the people of Gauteng and Sedibeng in particular a committed servant to the people, who did everything possible to improve service delivery,” Maile said.
Modisakeng ran the conflicting municipality at a time when it faced multiple allegations of corruption. Last year, Maile appointed lawyer William Mokhari to investigate allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement in Sedibeng Municipality.
Mokhari was also instructed to investigate serious allegations of mismanagement and corruption against Stanley Khanyile, who served as city manager from June 2017 until he was shot and killed in a shopping mall parking lot in October.
