CAPE TOWN – More than a week after a militant attack in northern Mozambique, South Africans who were in the region are returning home.
The South African National Defense Force (SANDF) confirmed that it was assisting the country’s high commission in Maputo to repatriate citizens wishing to return.

Deadly terrorist attacks in neighboring Mozambique have rocked the region.
Defense Force Siphiwe Dlamini: “South Africa is concerned about the security situation in Cabo Delgado, in the northern part of Mozambique. We remain busy with the security of South Africans in that province.”
Security analyst Jasmine Opperman said the entire region should be concerned.
“On the question of whether the region should be worried, they should have been worried a long time ago, to be frank, but we must understand that Mozambique is a sovereign state and therefore they will not compromise unless there is some kind of approval. on Maputo’s side. Maputo, on this point, favors bilateral commitments. ”
Opperman said thousands remained vulnerable.
“What has happened in Mozambique is just another indication of how sophisticated the insurgents have become, how brazen they have become to move so close to the Afungi site. It is an insurgency that cannot be seen, and should not be considered or underestimated. , as it is not only a risk for Mozambique but also for the region. ”
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has called a meeting on Tuesday.
