Cape Town – Cape Town police are investigating a shooting that resulted in the death of five people and left two others injured.
In a statement Tuesday, police spokeswoman Novela Potelwa said that a team attached to the provincial branch of detectives was investigating the shooting at the Nyanga terminal on Monday night.
The seven victims were sitting in a taxi on Sihlanu Avenue when gunmen approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots at 9:30 p.m., Potelwa said.
“Four men between the ages of 30 and 36 died at the scene,” he said.
“Another three were transferred to a medical center after suffering serious injuries. A fifth victim died in the hospital. Two other victims who were injured remain in the hospital. “
While investigators were looking for all leads, the motive for the incident was believed to be related to conflicts in the taxi industry, Potelwa added.
“Investigators have opened murder and attempted murder cases,” he said.
A police source told the African News Agency that the shooting in Nyanga was related to another incident on Monday when six suspects shot and injured six men and a woman in a wheelchair on the deck of the station in the central business district. from Cape Town shortly after noon.
The station deck is the area where all the minibus taxis from the entire Cape metropolis pick up thousands of passengers working in and around the city.
A Cape Town traffic officer arrested a suspect near the Castle of Good Hope and managed to recover a firearm. Five suspects remain at large.
Potelwa said police had been deployed to potential hotspots in response to both shooting incidents.
