- The alleged incident took place on September 18 and was reported on Saturday.
A 33-year-old Sangoma from Limpopo was arrested Sunday for allegedly raping a 20-year-old high school student.
The student had gone to his house for a consultation.
The sangoma also functions as a herder, police said in a statement.
Police spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the incident took place in September at the Sekhukhune police compound outside Burgersfort.
Ngoepe said: “The victim on September 18, 2020 allegedly visited this traditional pastor / healer for a consultation and, in the process, the suspect allegedly raped her.
“The victim was confused and terrified by the whole situation, and at a later stage realized that she had been deceived and raped by the man she trusted to heal her.”
The victim reported the matter to the police on Saturday and a rape case was opened, Ngoepe said.
The initial investigation was launched and the man was tracked down and arrested this afternoon. [Sunday]Added Ngoepe.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has strongly condemned the incident, adding that the alleged behavior of the sangoma can never be tolerated in society.
“This is a clear indication that there are some men who are stubborn and refuse to listen to the wake-up call from all walks of life regarding the scourge of gender-based violence, but, as a police officer, we will continue to work hard to protect vulnerable women and children within our communities from these sexual predators who take advantage of them because of their social status, “Ledwaba said.
Police investigations continue, Ngoepe said.
The man will appear soon in the Sekhukhune Magistrates Court.
