CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer conveyed her condolences to the families of two 11th graders who are said to have committed suicide last week.

The girls, Jade Gouws and Zara Malherbe were 17 years old.

They attended La Rochelle Secondary School in Paarl, and reportedly died 48 hours apart.

Schäfer has described the incidents as a tragedy: “It is quite tragic that people see no alternative but to end their lives.”

Schäfer has advice for students who may be struggling emotionally.

“I urge all students who are struggling to cope with emotions to contact their teachers who can help them get the help they need or to call the Safe Schools Hotline at 0800 45 46 47. Let’s do what we can and where we can we can support each other with the difficulties that life presents us ”.
