Johannesburg – A South African Social Security Agency official who allegedly used a fraudulent registration certificate to obtain a job was charged with fraud of R4 million, which is what the agency spent on her salary over a 14-year period .

Alina Dimakatso Nkwanyana Selepe allegedly used a fraudulent tuition certificate to get her job as a management team leader in Sassa in 2006.

It was only singled out once Sassa conducted an audit with the Basic Education Department when they discovered that the enrollment certificate was allegedly fraudulent.

The Hawks in Mpumalanga said the woman was arrested on Friday and charged with fraud in the amount of R4m, which is equal to her salary for the past 14 years.

She was charged with fraud and spent the weekend in jail and was released on bail of R3000 in Nelspruit Magistrates Court on Monday.

Mpumalanga Hawks spokesman Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation caught the woman on Friday for an alleged fraud that took place in 2006.

“It is alleged that in 2006, there was an advertised position for team leader administration in the Sassa department.

“When applying for said position, the suspect presented a fraudulent registration certificate which was one of the requirements for that position.

“As a result, the suspect was hired and appointed as an administrative team leader at SASSA, Volkrust, Mpumalanga,” Sekgotodi said.

He said the case against Selepe had been postponed until March 26 and confirmed that the woman was allegedly caught after Sassa embarked on an audit and found her certificate to be fraudulent.

“The matter was reported to the Hawks Nelspruit Serious Corruption Investigation during December 2020 and the investigation revealed that the suspect harmed the government more than R4 million in salary between 2006 and 2020,” Sekgotodi said.
