South Africa’s newest airline, Lift, now sells tickets, and they’re not necessarily cheap, according to a Business Insider South Africa price check.
Lift is scheduled to start flying its three Airbus A320 aircraft from December 10, from Johannesburg to Cape Town and George.
It has positioned itself as a superior value competitor, promising Vida e Caffè’s “‘proper coffee’ on morning flights” and “wine tasting with a selection of South Africa’s best wine estates” at the afternoon flights.
It also promises “hassle-free” cancellations and ticket changes.

But it still sells single tickets and you will pay for the extras. On a flight we check, one piece of checked baggage adds an additional R100 to the cost, two checked bags will cost R250, and a third will be added to pay for an additional R450.
You’ll also pay R70 extra to sit in an emergency row or one of the “rubber row” seats at the front of the plane, or R30 for a seat slightly further back.
This is what you will pay to fly in Lift
We check Lift prices based on flying Wednesday night December 23rd and returning Sunday afternoon January 3rd for standard South Africa holidays over the Christmas period.
There are no flights available between Johannesburg and George on the 23rd, so you would have to fly on Christmas Eve and also in the other direction, from George to Cape Town.
While flying from Cape Town or George is fairly competitive in that period, leaving Johannesburg will not be cheap.
Here’s what those return flights will cost you.
- Johannesburg to Cape Town: R4,410
- Johannesburg to George: R4,440
- Cape Town to Johannesburg: R1,950
- George to Johannesburg: R2,320
