JOHANNESBURG – The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa has increased to 10,652, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize announced on Monday.
This was an increase of 637 new COVID-19 cases.
The minister made the announcement during a press conference in the Eastern Cape a short while ago. He has been visiting the Eastern Cape, where there have been more infections.
Mkhize said 12 more people had died from the coronavirus pandemic, bringing to 206 the number of people who have died in the country.
There were 4,357 recoveries. A total of 356,067 COVID-19 tests have been conducted, of which 14,731 were new tests since Sunday’s report.
WESTERN CAPE SURGE IN CASES
Mkhize said the Western Cape remained a concern.
“The Western Cape is the one that’s got the highest increase 453, it gives us 5,621 from one province. That’s a matter of concern because it puts the Western Cape 52.8% of the total numbers in the country,” he said.
There also were more deaths in the province.
“Western Cape eight, Eastern Cape two, KwaZulu-Natal one, and North West one and this is the fi rst death in the province,” Mkhize said.
Mkhize also revealed that eight million citizens were screened for COVID-19.
